Internationally recognized for the quality of its faculty, research, and education, the College of Consumer and Family Sciences is one of the largest and most-respected colleges of its kind in the nation. While there are no current national rankings for consumer and family science programs, there are many accomplishments that demonstrate the college's excellence at the national and international levels.

Child Development and Family Studies

  • Within the department, there are three separate federal grant projects that focus on early childhood programs. These projects involve partnerships with local early childhood programs and communities throughout Indiana.
  • Established in 2000 with a $7.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense, the Military Family Research Institute conducts interdisciplinary research that examines how quality of life factors impact military members and their families, especially as it relates to job satisfaction, retention, and performance.
  • The department houses the Center for Families, a nationally recognized center that collaborates with educators, human service professionals, employers, and policymakers to improve the quality of life for families. The work of the center impacts individuals and families throughout Indiana and beyond.

 

Consumer Sciences and Retailing

  • Through the school's offices of Professional Development and Instructional Programs, CSR is developing relationships with educational and business institutions on all five continents.
  • The Center for Customer-Driven Quality in the Department of Consumer Sciences and Retailing is a national leader in research and education related to customer contact centers.
  • The undergraduate financial counseling and planning program is registered with the Certified Financial Planner Board. Upper division courses have been reviewed by the CFP Board to ensure they cover the core knowledge required to practice financial planning.

Foods and Nutrition

  • The Department of Foods and Nutrition is home to the Botanicals Center for Age-Related Diseases, one of only four centers in the United States devoted to botanicals research.
  • Results from Camp Calcium, a foods and nutrition research project, were used to establish new dietary guidelines for daily calcium requirements for adolescents, women, and men.
  • Interdisciplinary research between foods and nutrition and medicinal chemistry and molecular pharmacology led to the ground-breaking discovery of the mechanism (a protein) that serves as the basis for a universal cellular biological clock.

Hospitality and Tourism Management

  • In a survey of hospitality and tourism recruiters, HTM students are ranked as "having the best attitudes" of students in hospitality and tourism programs in the United States.
  • The Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management is ranked as the #1 bachelor's degree program of its type in the United States by industry recruiters.
  • The Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management is again ranked as the best program in the nation in a study conducted by Virginia Tech using the annual U.S. News & World Report's Guide to the Top Colleges (2000) methodology applied to the academic unit level.
