College Participates in Purdue Green Week
Purdue is going green September 15–19 as the University sponsors its first-ever Green Week to raise environmental awareness. CFS is joining the effort and will be initiating several green efforts in the HTM Cafe. To see what the college is doing, get ideas on how you can go green, and to send in your own suggestions for going green (and earn a chance to win a reuseable grocery tote), visit the CFS Green Week page. Darden Series Brings HTM Executives Into the Classroom
The annual Darden Series: Executives in the Classroom kicks off Thursday, September 11 as Ralph Brennan, president of Ralph Brennan Restaurant Group, comes to campus. He will speak at 10:30 a.m. in the Class of 1950 Lecture Hall, Room 224. The Darden Series will bring hospitality industry executives to campus through November. CFS to Host Study Abroad Fair
Students interested in studying abroad are encouraged to visit the CFS Study Abroad Fair on Wednesday, September 10, 4:00–8:00 p.m. in the HTM Cafe in Stone Hall. Information on more than 30 CFS study abroad programs will be available and former study abroad participants will be on hand to discuss their experiences. Pizza and drinks will be served. Prenatal Program Earns CFS Recognition
A Johnson County program that provides prenatal education and resources is the recipient of the college’s seventh annual Inspiring Families and Building Communities Award. The Ready or Not, Here I Come program serves pregnant teenage, uninsured, or underinsured women in their first trimester. Read more about this year’s winner. (7/08)
Research Initiative to Benefit Indiana Citizens and Beyond
The Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI) is a new initiative to efficiently transform life sciences discoveries into new medical treatments and products. Gas Prices, Economy Impact Summer Travel
Families, especially those with children, still want to travel this summer despite rising oil and gasoline prices. However, they will likely take shorter trips, says Liping Cai, director of the Purdue Tourism and Hospitality Research Center. Helping Parents Encourage Healthy Eating
A new program to help parents and other adult caregivers encourage healthy eating habits in their children will soon be available through CFS Extension. Raising Healthy Eaters is geared for parents of children ages 2–5 and teaches them how to deal with picky eaters and manage mealtime challenges. For information, contact your Extension office. (6/08)
Interdisciplinary Team Wins Sara Lee Innovation Award
A team of Purdue students, including one foods and nutrition student, took the $10,000 top prize in this year’s Sara Lee Innovation Award competition. The second annual contest is designed to spark culinary creativity while educating students on the process of creating, producing, and marketing a new food product. Homecoming Tickets Available in the CFS Block
Purdue’s Homecoming is October 24–25, and football tickets in the CFS block can be purchased online through Purdue Sports. Tickets are $40 each and are available through September 21 or until sold out. Visit Purdue Sports to order your tickets. You will need to enter promotion code: CFS. Extension Specialist Helps Consumers Deal with Economic Hardship
With incomes down, foreclosures up, and a struggling economy, many consumers are looking for advice in dealing with financial difficulty. "If your income suddenly drops when you're not prepared, the number one thing is to not panic because there are options and resources available to help," says Elizabeth Kiss, CFS Extension specialist in family resource management. The History of Home Economics
CFS alumna, Joyce Beery Miles, BS ’65, has been researching the history of home economics in anticipation of the 100th anniversary of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. She has completed extensive research on home economics pioneer Ellen Swallow Richards and her contributions to the home economics movement more than 100 years ago. Purdue Evaluates Program to Improve Indiana Child Care
Indiana is rolling out a new child care quality rating system with the help of Jim Elicker, associate professor and director of early childhood programs in Child Development and Family Studies.
