Getting the most out of your time at Purdue means getting involved. By participating in extracurricular activities, you can build friendships and create rewarding experiences that will last a lifetime. Most student organizations in the College of Consumer and Family Sciences are career-related and specific to a particular major or area of study. CFS Student Ambassadors and CFS Student Council are two groups open to all CFS students that provide a great opportunity for students to gain leadership experience. The CFS Multicultural Society for Excellence provides support and professional preparation to multicultural students in the college. In addition, there are two CFS honor societies. Beyond CFS, there are approximately 700 University student organizations that cover a wide range of interests.

CFS Student Ambassadors (back to top)

Student Ambassadors is a select group of 15 to 20 CFS students who serve as representatives of the college for recruiting, development, and alumni activities. Among their responsibilities, ambassadors attend and speak at alumni events, and talk with prospective students. To be eligible for the Ambassador program, students must have been enrolled in CFS for at least two semesters and have a minimum GPA of 2.5.

This organization represents all of the student body of the College of Consumer and Family Sciences. It functions as a liaison between the student, faculty and administration of the college while promoting communication and college activities. CFS Council petitions are accepted in the fall from first-year students, transfer students, and continuing CFS students. All first-year students are eligible for membership during their first semester.

The main goal for this organization is to prepare students to compete professionally. The emphasis will be placed on interviewing skills, resume writing, communication skills, and general professional growth and development for the students within the organization.

Child Development and Family Studies (back to top)

Indiana Association of Family & Consumer Sciences–Professional/Graduate Section is an affiliate section of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. AAFCS is a scientific and educational association of professionals that functions on local, state, national, and international levels. INAFCS-P/GS promotes the mission of the profession of family and consumer sciences, which is to improve the quality of life for individuals and families. Membership is open to anyone in the School of Consumer and Family Sciences. The call-out is held early in the fall semester and a professional activity is planned on a monthly basis.

Purdue Association for the Care of Child Health provides students interested in working with children in medical settings an opportunity to learn about professional roles as well as being involved in planning and implementing child health awareness activities. Most members are majors in child health; however, anyone interested is welcome.

Purdue Association for the Education of Young Children is a student organization affiliated with the National Association for the Education of Young Children, to which professionals in the fields of early childhood development, family studies, special education, and elementary education belong. Membership is open to anyone interested in the education and well-being of children from birth through age 8 and their families.

Purdue University Council on Family Relations addresses issues relevant to individuals and families across the life span. The organization’s major goals are to foster professional activities and interests among its members and to provide services to families. A local affiliate of the National Council on Family Relations, PUCFR prides itself on its commitment to encouraging scholastic excellence, developing leadership abilities, and promoting career development in the field of family studies. Membership in PUCFR is available to all Purdue students.

Organization for Competitive Sales is a training ground in competitive sales. CFS students must have completed CSR 315: Personal Preparation for Selling. The goal of this organization is to compete on an intercollegiate level.

Pi Sigma Epsilon is a National Sales and Marketing Business Fraternity and provides practical experience to enhance a student’s classroom education. Each chapter of Pi Sigma Epsilon is organized and operated as an independent small business. As such, participation offers practical experience to members through hands-on activities in sales and marketing projects, professional programs (speakers, company tours), public relations campaigns, human resource matters, community service, social activities, and much more. Membership is open to all individuals interested in sales, marketing, or business fields. Look for the Pi Sigma Epsilon callout at the beginning of September.

Purdue Collegiate Financial Planners introduces its members to opportunities available in the field of financial counseling and planning. Field trips to the Chicago Board of Trade and guest speakers at PCFP meetings provide insight to the profession and professional networking opportunities. Purdue Fashion Association is for students interested in the fashion industry. Meetings are held about every two weeks. As a member of the association, you have the opportunity to take part in community service projects, informational trips and meetings, as well as the preparation and execution of our annual Spring Fashion Show. All majors are welcome.

Purdue Retail Organization is a student organization for those majoring in the areas of management, fashion design, and sales with special interests in retailing. Not only does PRO provide contact with professionals in retailing, we also develop networking and mentoring programs for the members to learn more about their classes and more about the members of the organization. In addition, we devote time to community service and organize field trips to learn more about our future career in retailing. Visit the Purdue Retail Organization Web site.

Foods and Nutrition (back to top)

Food and Nutrition Society is an association of students interested in Foods and Nutrition. Club meetings feature speakers highlighting topics and professions in nutrition, fitness, overall health, and the food industry.

Food Science Club is for students majoring in food science or closely related areas. The club helps develop leadership in students through planning and sponsoring conferences. Profits from fund-raising projects allow students to take educational field trips.

Gerontology Student Organization disseminates information between students interested in gerontology (graduate and undergraduate) and faculty associated with the gerontology minor at Purdue.

Hospitality and Tourism Management (back to top)

Club Managers Association of America is designed to promote and advance relations among persons connected with the management of clubs. Students are involved in setting up field trips to various types of clubs as well as educational seminars for students interested in the various facets of club management. Griffin Corps is an elite foodservice team in training that serves at prestigious University functions. Corps members earn academic credit and are paid for hours worked. Members selected take HTM 393 Advanced Service Technique and HTM 394 Service Internship for a total of two credits. Visit the HTM Web site for more information.

Hospitality Marketing Association provides students with an interest in sales and marketing the opportunity to develop those skills working with hotels, restaurants, and tourist organizations throughout the Midwest. Six sales blitzes are organized each year. HMA members become part of the professional sales force of a company, making personal phone calls on their behalf. HMA provides a great opportunity to network with executives in the hospitality industry, gain valuable sales experience, and stay in some of the finest hotels in the region (all expenses paid!!). HTM Society is an association of students who wish to develop their skills in the hospitality and tourism industry. HTM Society's mission is to promote learning and friendship, and to be a vehicle for its members by providing an opportunity for contact with professionals within the hospitality industry, and to work to promote our school and program to those individuals and companies. Activities scheduled for this upcoming year include a trip to New York for the hotel/motel show, our annual auction of hotel and restaurant packages, and our Annual Boilermaker Black Tie Dinner. Professional Convention Management Association familiarizes its members with the basic aspects of the meetings and conventions field through educational and networking opportunities supported or developed by the Professional Convention Management Association and its members. Purdue Tourism Association is a support group for students interested in the tourism industry. Guest speakers help students gain insight into the types of jobs available upon graduation. Students take field trips so that they may make job contacts at tourism conferences held across the United States. Visit the HTM Web site for more information.

Honor Societies (back to top)

Gamma Sigma Delta is an honor society for students in the colleges of Consumer and Family Sciences, Agriculture, and the School of Veterinary Medicine.

Kappa Omicron Nu is a national honor society for students in CFS. Its purpose is to promote scholarship and leadership. Undergraduates who have completed 45 semester hours with at least a 3.0 GPA and are in the top 25 percent of their unit are invited to join. Graduate students with at least a 3.5 grade point average also are invited to join.
