you have a history of high scholastic achievement, then you may
be eligible for the Honors Program
in the College of Consumer and Family Sciences. The program provides
many learning opportunities while enabling
you to independently explore an area related to your major academic
interest. You will experience the challenges and rewards associated
with planning and completing a research project. Throughout
the Honors Program, you work under the guidance of a Faculty
Honors Advisor. Successful completion of the project results
in recognition including an Honors
Degree (graduating with honors). You can apply for
the Honors Program at any time during your college career.

Eligibility

- First-year students must have a combined SAT score (verbal and math only) of
1200, a 27 ACT score, or graduate in the top 10 percent of their
high school class.
- Current Purdue students and transfer students must have
a minimum GPA of 3.2 (or equivalent).
Learning
Opportunities (back to top)
- First-Year Students (1 credit/semester): Participate
in the CFS Dean's Honors Discussion Group and hear guest speakers
and discuss current topics with fellow CFS honors students.
- Sophomore Year (1 credit/semester): Participate
in an Honors Discussion Group in your major department and learn
about exciting issues in your field of study while exploring opportunities
for individual projects with faculty honors mentors.
- Junior Year (1-3 credits/semester)*: Work one-on-one
with a faculty honors mentor, and with the guidance of your mentor,
complete a proposal describing your scholarly honors project.
- Senior Year (1-3 credits/semester)*: Complete
your honors project, under the direction of your faculty honors
mentor, and present your project to family, friends, and faculty
during the annual Honors Colloquium.
* To graduate with honors,
you must complete and present a research/scholarly project (6
credits of Independent Study).
Faculty

Honors students work with
faculty honors advisors in completing their projects. Usually, students
select their own faculty honors advisor according to their particular
area of interest.
Recognition

Successful completion
of the program results in an Honors Degree (graduating with honors).
Additional recognition includes:
- Twice a year, CFS has an Honors Colloquium at which graduating
Honors students present the results of their final projects. This
is a wonderful occasion for family and friends to attend and is
a major recognition event for CFS Honors students.
- The statement "Completed Honors Program in Consumer and
Family Sciences" appears on your transcript.
- You earn a certificate of recognition from Purdue University.
- The Commencement program indicates the names of those graduates
who have fulfilled the requirements as set forth by the CFS Honors
Council.

The CFS Honors Program is coordinated by the CFS Honors Council. This council consists of 10 members (one faculty and one student representative from the four departments and CFS education). The dean of the College of Consumer and Family Sciences chairs the Honors Council. The CFS Honors Program coordinator, a CFS academic advisor, provides administrative support.
