Individual and Family Studies

If you are planning to go on to graduate studies; are interested in double majoring in two programs; are thinking of participating in global studies opportunities; or are unable to perform a full-time, semester-long internship for various reasons; check out the individual and family program. It’s offered through the department of child development and family studies in the School of Consumer and Family Sciences.

Testimonial

"I cannot praise the staff and professors in the School of Consumer and Family Sciences enough for all the unique and one-on-one attention I received as a student."

Krista Kraemer, 1995 Consumer and Family Sciences graduate
Family Resource Center Coordinator
Indian Trail Elementary Family Resource Center
Louisville, Kentucky

Career Options
Your career choices depend upon your coursework choices. Alone, the program provides excellent preparation for graduate education. As part of a double major, it can expand your expertise and help you get a better paying or higher-level job.

In addition, including a study-abroad experience or the global studies program will make you attractive to employers looking for an international perspective.

If you want to go on to graduate work, consider the M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Purdue’s department of child development and family studies, which consistently rank in the nation’s top five.

Coursework
Depending on your area of specialization, coursework may include:

  • adult development
  • child development
  • family studies
  • gender, diversity, and multiculturalism
  • programs for individuals and families
  • research methods
  • social issues

Many students in IFS choose independent study courses and work individually with faculty on their research.

Learn from Experience
Even though this major doesn’t require an internship, your coursework still offers practical experience:

  • Use observation booths and other state-of-the-art instructional facilities to aid in the learning process.

  • Develop practical skills such as listening and questioning through role-playing scenarios.

  • Join the Purdue University Council on Family Relations or other student organizations that sponsor helpful workshops and presentations.
