Do
you have a history of high scholastic achievement? If so, you may
be eligible for the Honors Program in the School of Consumer and
Family Sciences. The program enables you to independently explore
an area related to your major academic interest. The objective is
for you to experience the challenges and rewards associated with
planning and completing a research project. Throughout the Honors
Program, you work under the guidance of a Faculty Honors Advisor.
Successful completion of the project results in an Honors Degree
(graduating with honors).
Eligibility
You can become an Honors student at any time during your college
career.
- First-year
students must have a combined SAT score of 1200 (27 ACT score)
or graduate in the top 10 percent of their high school class.
- Current
Purdue students and transfer students must have a minimum
GPA of 3.2 (or equivalent).
Learning
Opportunities
- First-Year
Students
Participate in the CFS Dean's Honors Discussion Group and hear
guest speakers and discuss current topics with fellow CFS honors
students.
(1 credit/semester)
- Sophomore
Year
Participate in an Honors Discussion Group in your major department
and learn about exciting issues in your field of study while exploring
opportunities for individual projects with faculty honors mentors.
(1 credit/semester)
- Junior
Year
Work one-on-one with a faculty honors mentor, and with the guidance
of your mentor, complete a proposal describing your scholarly
honors project.
(1-3 credits/semester)*
- Senior
Year
Complete your honors project, under the direction of your faculty
honors mentor, and present your project to family, friends, and
faculty during the annual Honors Colloquium.
(1-3 credits/semester)*
* To
graduate with honors, you must complete and present a research project
(6 credits in 490 Honors Independent Study).
Recognition
Successful completion of the program results in an Honors Degree
(graduating with honors). Additional recognition is as follows:
- The
statement "Completed Honors Program in Consumer and Family
Sciences" appears on your transcript.
- You
earn a certificate of recognition from Purdue University.
- The
Commencement program indicates the names of those graduates who
have fulfilled the requirements as set forth by the CFS Honors
Council.
Procedures

If you would like to apply for the Honors Program, an application
is available from the Associate
Dean for Learning in Room 114, Stone Hall.
Honors
Council
The Honors Council directs the Honors Program and is composed of
10 members, one faculty representative and one student representative
from each department in the School and from CFS Education. In addition
to serving on the council, faculty representatives assist students
in the selection of a Faculty Honors Advisor.
