Judy Hinshaw Singleton's father always hoped his little girl would
get married, have kids, and settle down one day. Her goal was to
become a career girl and to earn enough money so she would never
have to make her own clothes again. Well, she's accomplished both

Research May Improve Taste of Low-Fat Foods
It wasn't your imagination that the fat-free chocolate chip cookie
dough ice cream didn't taste as good as the full-fat version, despite
what the label said. Your no-guilt taste treat was indeed lacking
in taste. Contrary to prevailing views, fat does have taste after
all, according to research being done in the foods and nutrition
department.

the Leader Inside
Throughout life, we are asked to step up to the plate and make a
contribution of our time and talents by taking on a leadership responsibility.
You may be asked to lead a Girl Scout troop or head up a task force
at work. Depending on who you are, you may be comfortable with that
responsibility or you may shrink from it.

Conference to Focus on Leadership
The 2002 Felker Conference takes on a new format this year, focusing
on leadership issues for students and alumni. It will be held Friday,
April 19 at the University Inn and Conference Center in West Lafayette.
The program will start with lunch at 11:30 a.m., followed by a session
in the afternoon.

Receives Recognition
Ray Kavanaugh, PhD, professor and head of the hospitality and tourism
management department, was named in the Journal of Hospitality &
Tourism Education (Vol. 13, No. 1, 2001) as among the 108 most influential
hospitality education scholars internationally from 1988-99.

Development Director Promoted to Senior Position
Cheryl Altinkemer, CFS director of development and alumni relations,
is now a senior director of development for Purdue University. The
new position was effective January 1, although Altinkemer will continue
to assist the CFS development office on a limited basis to ease
the transition until her replacement is hired.

CFS
Campaign Surpasses Goal
The School of Consumer and Family Sciences raised $15 million during
its Inspiring Families, Building Communities planned giving campaign
(July 1, 1998-December 31, 2001). The goal for the campaign was
$10 million, to be used for faculty support, scholarships, the Center
for Families, and unrestricted funds for future needs.
