CFS Education Prepares Students
to Teach Life Skills in Schools
Some of the most important lessons being taught in middle and
high schools are those being taught in family and consumer sciences
(FACS) classes. Bearing little resemblance to the "stitch and stir"
classes of years ago, today's FACS education focuses on helping students
develop the ability to become independent, to assume family and community
roles, and to succeed in the workplace.

Alum's Career "Borders" on a Dream
At age 16, Tami Somoya demonstrated a tenacity that would
serve her well in her future career. Applying for employment with
the new Lazarus store in Indianapolis, she was told that all the
part-time positions had been filled. "I said, 'You don't understand,
I'm here to get a job and I want to work at this store,' " Tami
recalls. "I did get a job. It was the lowest position, but I loved
it!" Her love affair with retail had begun.

Extension Finds Success with Cutting-Edge
Technology
When the Extension Service was established in 1911, home demonstration
agents would travel by train, horse and buggy, and occasionally
by automobile to bring the latest in homemaking skills to Hoosier
women. Ninety years later, the message and method have changed dramatically.

Hanleys' Gift Supports Gerontology Program
Like most families, the Hanleys of Omaha, Nebraska, celebrate Thanksgiving
with a family feast. However, there's more than turkey on the minds
of this family. Bill and Sally Berner (BS '61) Hanley, use the annual
get-together as an opportunity to have a family meeting and discuss,
among other things, which causes they want to support in the coming
year.

Madame Akeley Made Physics Fun for HE Students
From 1942 to 1971, Austrian-born Anna Akeley taught physics to home
economics students. "I just remember her great enthusiasm and her
ability to make her lectures and laboratories a joy," recalls Karen
Jamesen, BS '62, MS '66, assistant professor of foods and nutrition
at Purdue. Jamesen's feelings represent how many alumni feel toward
Akeley, fondly known as "Madame Akeley" among her students.

75th Anniversary 2001 Calendar is a Useful
and Unique Keepsake
The School of Consumer and Family Sciences will celebrate its 75th
anniversary in 2001. The 75th anniversary planning committee, headed
by Annie Watts Cloncs, BS '69, is organizing the year-long celebration,
which will culminate in a gala event to be held during Homecoming
weekend, October 26-27, 2001. Future issues of Focus will have more
information on these activities as details become available.

2000 Outstanding Seniors Demonstrate Leadership
and Initiative
Each year, the CFS Alumni Association Board of Directors presents
Outstanding Senior Awards. Students are selected by the faculty
and counselors from their departments on the basis of scholarship,
leadership, professionalism, and service to others. Each receives
a cash award, a personalized desk set, and his or her name is engraved
on a permanent plaque in the foyer of Stone Hall. The following
Outstanding Seniors graduated in May 2000.
