Family and consumer sciences (FACS) education is the new name for
the field formerly known as home economics education. At Purdue,
the teacher-education program is called "consumer and family
sciences education" in keeping with the name of the School
of Consumer and Family Sciences.
The goal of FACS
education in Indiana is to empower individuals and families
across the life span to manage the challenges of living and working
in a diverse, global society. Our unique focus is on families, work,
and their interrelationships.
Today's middle and high school family and consumer sciences classes
are relevant for everyone. They include classes on such subjects
as life careers, nutrition and wellness, interpersonal relationships,
child development and parenting, and adult roles and responsibilities.
