A “world of opportunities” awaits study abroad students in the Department of Foods & Nutrition. Opportunities within the Department of Foods and Nutrition are mushrooming under the leadership of Carol Boushey. Two curriculum specific study abroad options are now open for many of our classes at Dublin Institute of Technology in Ireland and at Curtin University in Perth, Australia.
In fall 2005, we entered an exchange relationship with DIT when four of their final year students participated in research projects under the mentorship of F&N professors. In summer 2006, our first exchange student to DIT (Dublin Institute of Technology), participated in a community nutrition program in Dublin under the mentorship of one of four students from DIT who spent the fall of 2005 in F&N the Department of Foods & Nutrition at Purdue! The reciprocal relationship exhibited in this interchange is at the heart of the international exchange system. In the fall of 2006 five more Irish students from DIT fulfilled their research requirements in four departmental labs, Boushey, Mattes, Teegarden & Weaver.
The educational scenario with DIT and Curtin University in Perth, Australia are unique study abroad experiences for dietetic and other nutrition majors at Purdue. These are the first study abroad programs where our students are able to take required courses for their nutrition and foods curriculum and not just electives or general education courses. Both the program in Dublin and the one in Perth are excellent. We have great confidence our students will have a rich nutrition experience in those programs. Because of the quality of education we have observed in the DIT students doing research here, the F&N faculty has approved a direct semester approval from DIT for F&N curriculum. This will smooth the way for more F&N students to participate in these excellent exchange programs.
In addition to the programs at DIT , Curtin and general Purdue University study abroad programs, other options will soon be opening for F&N students. A site visit to the Denmark International Study program to explore science and elective tracks applicable to Foods and Nutrition students has been completed. There has also been a site visit to Roanne, France to create a new Spring Break course exploring the French Paradox as it relates to nutrition, dietary patterns, and cultural practices. This is a joint effort with Languages department and should be very popular.
Many of our students will work abroad or have an international component to a job over the course of their professional career. Study abroad is an important curriculum initiative to support the careers of tomorrow.
