Graduate Study

Nutrition at Purdue University has an excellent national and international reputation. We offer programs leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Our foods and nutrition faculty have distinguished themselves through teaching and research, and our students enjoy a faculty-to-student ratio of 1:2.5. Our students have opportunity to participate in an active graduate student group.

All students interested in a graduate degree in nutrition enter Purdue University through the Interdepartmental Nutrition Program. This is the umbrella program that coordinates nutrition-related training and research activities at Purdue University. The average length of time to attain a PhD degree is three years post master's, or five years without a master's.

Training is provided in one of the following Emphasis Groups:

Students who are interested in food science have several options:

  • If your interest is in how foods or food components influence the health of people or animals, you should apply to the INP. The INP has faculty with expertise in food toxicology, sensory evaluation, product formulation, botanicals, and consumer behavior.
  • If you are interested in nutrition in aging populations, you may choose to complete a Dual-Title PhD in Gerontology or you may complete a Graduate Certificate in Gerontology while you are studying for your degree. Please notify us of your interest in the personal statement that is a part of your application or in the information you supply us before applying.

If you would like to talk to a current graduate student in the Department of Foods and Nutrition, you can contact Mary-Jon Ludy at mludy@purdue.edu.
