THE PROFESSION
OF DIETETICS
GOALS:
1) To learn the following about
the academic preparation for majors in dietetics:
-the didactic knowledge and skills
-the preprofessional
practice program competencies and skills
-how to decide between different types of preprofessional practice programs
-how to develop a competitive application for a preprofessional practice program
2) To learn about employment of
dietetic professionals with respect to:
-traditional employment
-nontraditional employment and related
entrepreneurial skills
-the current and projected job market
-employment for non-Registered Dietitians
3) To develop a professional
goal statement based on one’s own self-assessment
4) To learn about summer
employment in dietetics, practicums, and how to write
a professional letter for employment and a professional resume
5) To learn about credentials
related to dietetics:
-the RD credential
-the licensure, or other state administered,
credentials
-advanced practice credentials
6) To learn about life-long
learning as a requirement for maintenance of credentials
7) To learn about the American Dietetic
Association and the Code of Ethics for dietetic
Professionals
COURSE ASSIGNMENTS AND
EVALUATION:
1) You must view all
video-tapes in the Undergraduate Library . Five points of the class total of 100 are
deducted for each class tape not viewed by end of week of Feb. 28.
Only the last tape is not relevant to the exam on
2/28/05.
2) There are 100 total points
in the course divided as follows: 2 assignments of 25 points
each and 1 exam
of 50 points. The exam will have questions from the lectures and the
syllabus
materials and will be open-note/syllabus. All assignments are to be handed-in
by noon on the
date specified at the second floor F&N office in Stone Hall. NOTE:
The F&N Office closes from noon-1PM.
Your assignment must be handed-in
BEFORE the office closes
at noon. The assignment receives
a letter grade of “A” if
ALL the required components of the
assignment are complete and the assignment met
all criteria
discussed in the tape. Late assignments receive points off at the rate of 1
point per hour
from the time the assignment is due.
POLICIES:
This course and it’s
instructors will follow all policies outlined in the University Regulations
Handbook. This includes policies related to all types of dishonesty,
discrimination, or harassment or intimidation of any person in the course.

1. The course syllabus is ONLY
available in the Boiler Copy Maker: 157
2. The attached page 5 and 6 are
from the syllabus. It lists all the topics for the class,
assignments for the class, and due
dates. Each of the 2 projects in the class is
explained in detail on the tapes when
they are assigned. BEFORE
1/14, you are to:
a) get your personal copy of
the course syllabus
b) complete p 7 and pp 8-10 of the
course syllabus and hand them in by 1/14.
3. You may watch as many of the
videotapes as you wish at any time, but the course only requires 2 per week
beginning the week of 1/17. The course is over the week of 2/28. The course tapes are from the fall semester.
Tape 1 covers the same information as we discussed on 1/11.
4. DO
take your syllabus materials with you when you view the tapes to facilitate
following the
lecture material.
5. At Purdue, the video tapes
are housed in the Undergraduate Library located in
