    DISCOVERY

Dr. Boushey’s research interests include dietary assessment methods, adolescent dietary behaviors, school-based interventions, food insecurity, and applications of quantitative methods. She led two multi-site randomized school trials that resulted in the No Bones About It! and Eat Move Learn programs for middle schools. Dr. Boushey’s epidemiological research in the study of populations and what and how people eat has aided in identifying psychosocial factors influencing consumption of calcium rich foods in adolescents and their parents, as well as influences on bone mass in early adolescent girls. Dr. Boushey is collaborating with engineers to develop methods of dietary assessment that use advanced digital technology and concepts completely new to the field of dietary assessment. She is a member of the National Community Engagement Steering Committee of the CTSA (Clinical and Translational Science Awards) and the Community Coordinating Committee of the Community Health Engagement Program of Indiana’s Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute. Her work in nutritional epidemiology that complements the philosophy of Community Based Participatory Research involves a collaborative effort between investigators from the University of Maryland and members of three Pacific Northwest Tribal Nations.

    ENGAGEMENT

Responsible for development of Spring break study abroad course, The Culture and Food of France. The pedagogical goal is to enhance the FN undergraduate offerings to include a unique experience in the French culture while at the same time to enrich the alimentary knowledge in that culture. The target culture of France is especially important for the students of FN since gastronomy is so entwined in the essence of Frenchness and prominent topics in FN studies are rooted in France, i.e., the Mediterranean diet, the French Paradox.

    LEARNING

    Courses

Fall semester Coordinated Program courses: Experience in Community Nutrition (F&N 426) - Application of instructional strategies and communication skills in nutrition to community settings, health facilities, and nutrition programs. AND Foodservice Systems Management Experience (F&N 443) - Experience in Purdue Residence Halls foodservice facilities, designed to accompany F&N 442 and RHI 311Y. Clinical experience ultimately to include staff responsibility in foodservice supervision.

Spring semester Coordinated Program course: Clinical Dietetics Experience (F&N 461) - Medical nutrition therapy experience in medical facilities and outpatient services. Clinical experience ultimately to include staff relief in medical nutrition therapy in acute care.

Summer semester Coordinated Program course: Capstone Experience (F&N465) - Application of community, food service, and medical nutrition therapy skills in long term care. Clinical experience to include staff relief in long term care, as well as 2 weeks in self-selected experience.

Sumer semester graduate course (offered every other summer): Nutritional Epidemiology (F&N590E)- The study of the nutritional determinants of health and disease in human populations. The field is complex as it encompasses the interactions between genetic, behavioral, and environmental factors in populations. The results from epidemiologic studies provide the bridge between basic science and public policy. This course will introduce the basic principles and methods used in nutritional epidemiology. The course will review the design, conduct, analysis and interpretation of studies investigating the relationship between diet, nutritional status, and measures of health, well-being, and disease. The measurement methods most commonly used will be emphasized with use of current literature in the field.
