Child Care Culinary Workshop

Indiana’s 2007 Team Nutrition Training Grant project will implement a statewide plan to train child care foodservice staff on planning and preparing meals and snacks that comply with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPyramid.

The workshops will build knowledge and skills in the areas of:

  • child nutrition
  • menu planning
  • quantity recipes
  • label reading
  • food preparation
  • food safety
  • meeting budgetary restrictions

The workshops will also motivate and inspire staff to create a total environment that recognizes the role of quality nutrition education and positive adult role-modeling for children to build lifelong healthy beliefs and behaviors. The workshops will present ideas for encouraging children to consume more fruits and vegetables, whole-grain products, fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products, and lean meat and meat alternatives.

Twenty half-day workshops will be conducted throughout the state, making them accessible to Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) participants, excluding Family Daycare Homes.

Workshop design will be based on a thorough needs assessment and will incorporate dialogue learning and food demonstrations. Resource materials will be developed and distributed to the workshop participants. Video-based training resources will also be created.
