Gas Pump Safety

A lesson plan and PowerPoint presentation called Dos and Don'ts at the Gas Pump: Static Electricity Fires–How to Prevent Them, can be viewed or downloaded below. There also are links to a seven-page participant handout and an abbreviated two-page handout, and a pre- post-evaluation. You can also order a companion video, on VHS tape, CD, or DVD for $10.

You can watch a video clip of a flash fire that erupted February 12, 2004, as a woman (who had gained a healthy dose of static electricity by returning to her car for a few minutes) touched the gas pump nozzle, which had shut off. She pulled the nozzle out of the fill pipe on her car, but because it had shut off, she was not injured and there was no damage to her car. Watch video
