CSR 100: Introduction to CSR
Prerequisite: Classification
1-2 only or consent of instructor.
Description: A workshop to familiarize
students to the CSR department, department majors, advising resources,
and major requirements. Special emphasis on basic freshman survival
skills.
CSR 120: Introduction to Apparel Industry
Prerequisite: Classification
1-4 only or consent of instructor.
Description: Introductory course
which explores all facets of the apparel industry from its
historical beginnings to concept of design and product development,
to marketing, to manufacturing, to distribution, to retailing.
Throughout the course, the student will learn about the career
opportunities within the apparel industry.
CSR 190H: First-Year Seminar
Prerequisite: Admitted high
school students who have either a 1200 combined SAT score (equivalent
ACT score) or graduate in top 10 percent of class; letter of
invitation from the CFS dean. Repeatable to a maximum of 2 credits.
Description: A one-credit
(each semester) first-year honors seminar consists of guest speakers
and discussions of broad intellectual issues.
CSR 209: Introduction to Retailing Management
Prerequisite: CSR 105 or consent
of instructor.
Description: Retail
career paths, management training, merchandise control, organization
and service structure, and a comparison of store types.
CSR 215: Textiles
Description: A basic
textiles course dealing with the properties of textile fibers
and fabrics and their impact on product performance and consumer
satisfaction. Emphasis on retail, apparel, and interior design
applications.
CSR 215L: Textiles Laboratory
Description: Laboratory
work to accompany CSR 215.
CSR 220: Apparel Design I
Prerequisite: Apparel Design majors only.
Description: Introductory course
that deals with the evolution of apparel design through the principles
of flat pattern design, three-dimensional draping, and computer-aided-design
(CAD for pattern design). Fundamentals for apparel design. Students
create designs for a basic, sleeveless, collarless top.
CSR 221: Apparel Design II
Prerequisite: CSR
220; Apparel Design majors only.
Description: Continued development
of apparel design from concept to finished product through
the application of flat pattern design, draping, and computer-aided
design. Building on the introductory course to create apparel
wear design that includes sleeves, collars, blouses/shirts,
dresses, pants, and skirts. Introduction to pattern grading
manually and through CAD, and marker for apparel production.
CSR 222: CAD for Apparel Design & Retailing
II
Prerequisite: CS
110 and CSR 121; Apparel Design majors only.
Description: Study of computer-aided
design for apparel pattern making, pattern grading for
sizes, and marker making for the manufacturing
of apparel and other sewn products. Operation of CAD systems
from Gerber Technology — AccuMark PDS and GMS, and PDM
(Product Date Management) are incorporated in this course.
CSR 223: Apparel Assembly
Prerequisite: Apparel
Design majors only.
Description: Experimentation of basic
professional techniques for apparel assembly utilizing both
domestic and industrial equipment. Course
includes apparel construction, fitting, and finishing of a
variety of garments. Students gain insight into the relationship
between creative design and quality of a finished product.
CSR 255: Apparel Showcase
Prerequisite: Apparel
Design majors only. Repeatable to a maximum of 8 credits.
Description: Production
of annual apparel showcase of apparel original designs and artwork
of apparel design majors. All students
in the apparel design major work on teams to produce the annual
event.
CSR 282: Customer Relations Management
Description: A course
that provides insight into the structure and workings of customer
relations management and its role in business and government
agency. Analysis of how consumer needs, complaints, and education
are handled. Customer relations management in the real world
and techniques used in managing customer relations towards the
goal of maximizing customer satisfaction. This course has a real
world focus and is more applied than the usual introductory course.
CSR 290H: Seminar on Current Issues
Prerequisite: Admittance into
the CSR Honors Program, classification 3 or 4. May be repeated
for up to 2 credits.
Description: Class
will focus on current consumer science issues facing households
and businesses. The emphasis is placed on
exploring current research issues in consumer sciences.
CSR 300: Field Experience in Retail Management
Prerequisite: CSR 209, retail
management major or apparel design and technology major; advance
approval of director and employer; and attendance at pre- and
post- organization meeting is required.
Description: Approved in-service
training, a total of 140 hours; development of activities plan;
and report of activities. Recommended for semester 3, 4, 5,
or 6.
CSR 307: Field Experience Sales and Sales Management
Prerequisite: Selling and
Sales Management major; AGEC 331; CSR 315.
Description: Approved in-service and
supervised practical experience in selling and sales management.
Total of 140 hours required with in-depth report and analysis
of activities. Attendance
at CSR 307 organizational meeting is required.
CSR 309: Leadership Strategies
Description: Provides
knowledge of humanistic processes that contribute to development
of effective leadership.
CSR 315: Personal Preparation for Selling
Prerequisite: AGEC
331; Selling and Sales Management majors only; or consent of
instructor.
Description: Intensive personal preparation
for communication in selling. Students receive instruction
in communication skills, focusing on listening and on both
verbal and non-verbal presentation skills. The focus is on
transactional selling (short-term sales). Throughout
the semester, students practice interaction skills in role-played
selling situations. All sessions are videotaped, and students
view and critique their own performance in conference with
the instructor. Students also complete a personal development
project designed to enhance their personal readiness to enter
a selling career.
CSR 322: Field Experience in Apparel Design and
Technology
Prerequisite: CSR 221
and 223. Minimum of 140 hours of work per credit hour.
Required 2 credits, minimum. Repeatable to a maximum of
3 credits. Limited to Apparel Design majors; advance approval
of director and employer; and attendance at organizational
meeting. Recommended after semester 4.
Description: Approved
in-service training in the apparel industry and any related sewn
product company and/or theatrical production. This
experience is intended to provide the opportunity for a student
to apply skills and expertise gained through the study in apparel
design courses. Required report of daily responsibilities
plus a final report.
CSR 323: Visual Merchandising Prerequisite: CSR
209 and COM 256.
Description: Creative experimentation,
production, and analysis of promotional formats for merchandising
of product in a retail setting. Study of the elements and principles
of design and their application for promotion of retail merchandise
and/or services.
CSR 327: History of Fashion
Description: Exploration
of the historical development of Western world fashion from
the ancient world through the 21st century. Students
learn to understand the impact and influence of society, culture,
art, work economics and politics, and technology on the style
of fashion—past, present, and future.
CSR 328: Apparel Art and Design Prerequisite: A&D
114 and 213 and CSR 121.
Description: Exploration and experimentation
of creative rendering of apparel design through the use of
various media. Opportunity for the students to develop their
own unique style of illustrating fashion.
CSR 331: Consumer Behavior
Prerequisite: SOC
100 and PSY 120. Credit
will not be given for both CSR 331 and PSY 285.
Description: An interdisciplinary
survey of consumer behavior theory focused on psychological,
sociological, and cultural influences on consumer choice and
use of products and services.
CSR 332: Cross-Cultural Marketing and International
Retailing Prerequisite: MGMT
323 or consent of instructor. Description: Examination of marketing/retail
practices used to target domestic and global consumer market
segments. Development
of successful retail and marketing strategies is stressed.
CSR 342: Personal Finance
Description: Lectures
and discussion on problems of managing one's personal finances. Covers
budgeting; use and cost of credit; life and property insurance;
income and estate taxation; housing; saving and investments;
and wills, trusts, and estate planning.
CSR 355: Apparel Showcase
Prerequisite: Apparel
Design majors only. Repeatable
to a maximum of 2 credits.
Description: Planning of annual apparel
showcase of apparel original designs and artwork of apparel
design majors. All juniors and
seniors in the apparel design major work with co-leaders to
plan the annual vent. This course will be an avenue to
work with special projects as requested by outside interest
groups.
CSR 380: Field Experience in Financial Counseling
and Planning
Prerequisite: CSR
342 and consent of instructor. Limited to students
majoring in Financial Counseling and Planning. Repeatable
to a maximum of 4 credits.
Description: Approved in-service
training and practicum experience in financial service
institutions, counseling agencies, consumer education programs,
and financial planning firms; a minimum of 140 hours per
credit plus a final report.
CSR 386: Risk Management
Description: The course
includes principles of insurance, analysis and evaluation of
risk exposures, legal aspects of insurance, insurance needs
and analysis, policy selection, and insurance company selection
and due diligence. Types of insurance that are
studied include: property and casualty, health, life, long-term
care, disability, and general business liability.
CSR 390: Undergraduate Special Problems
Prerequisite: 6 hours of CSR or consent of instructor.
Repeatable to a maximum of 6 credits.
Description: Individual participation,
supervised reading, laboratory or field experiments, or research
in special areas of the field.
CSR 390B: Excelling in Sales Negotiation
Prerequisite: CSR 315
Description: An introduction to sales negotiation skills with emphasis (i) on the creating a win-win situation for the customer and the salesperson, (ii) preparing for a negotiating agreement, and (iii) developing negotiating tactics. Topics include what is sales negotiation, the sales professional as a negotiation agent, types of negotiation, principles of win-win situation, concepts of negotiation, negotiating tactics, preparing for each step in negotiation, overcoming barriers to agreement. Case studies are discussed. Students receive hands-on experience through participation in a negotiation management simulation and role-played situations.
CSR 390D: Professional Development
CSR Sophomores and Juniors only. Open to students seeking Summer 2009 internship.
CSR 390E: Consumer Behavior in E-Commerce
Prerequisite: CSR 331
CSR 390H: Independent Undergraduate Research
Prerequisite: Admission
to CFS Honors program. Classification of 5 or greater. Repeatable
to a maximum of 6 credits.
Description: Honors research. Individual
research projects undertaken with faculty supervision.
CSR 391: Undergraduate Structured Problems
Description: Group participation in
an organized class, a structured workshop, or research problem
in a particular area of the field. May be repeated.
CSR 401: Buying of Merchandise
Prerequisite: CSR
209, MGMT 200 or HTM 141, MGMT 323, and 3 hours of computer
science.
Description: Principles of volume
buying applicable to department, chain, specialty, and independent
stores.
CSR 403: Retail Management Internship
Prerequisite: Retail
management major, CSR 209, minimum 2.5/4.0 GPA prior field
experience, completion of application and pre-approval of internship
by internship director. Attendance at pre- and post-organization
meetings is required.
Description: A supervised full-time
internship in retail and related industries. This experience
will enable students to further develop their professional
interests and skills.
CSR 404: Strategic Issues for Sales and Retailing
Prerequisite: CSR 209, MGMT
200 or HTM 141, MGMT 323, or consent of instructor.
Description: Analysis of selected retail
organizations and their channel partners through in-depth discussion
of contemporary paradigms in strategic marketing from both sales
and retailing perspectives and their applications to management.
CSR 406: E-retailing
Prerequisite: Senior
in retailing or consent of instructor.
Description: To provide understanding
of the technological and retail infrastructure
that underlines doing retailing over the internet. Build
an understanding of business strategies over the net. To
identify management issues and consumer issues in e-retailing.
CSR 415: Sales Force Management
Prerequisite: AGEC 331, CSR 315, MGMT
323, MGMT 200 or HTM 141 or consent of instructor. Seniors
only.
Description: An introduction
to sales force management. An examination
of the sales force management process including principles
of recruiting and selecting, training, compensation, motivation,
supervision, and evaluation. Planning skills, including
sales force deployment and the role of the sales force in sales
forecasting are also covered.
CSR 417: Relationship Selling
Prerequisite: AGEC
331, CSR 315, MGMT 323, or equivalent marketing course or consent
of instructor. Seniors only.
Description: An introduction to relationship
selling with emphasis on the knowledge and skills needed for
working in long-term partnerships with business customers. Topics
include negotiation, building trust, managing customer retention,
power/influence strategies, consultative selling, and ethical
considerations. Case
studies are discussed. Students receive hands-on experience
through participation in an account management simulation and
role-played situations.
CSR 421: Apparel Design III
Prerequisite: CSR
221, 222, 223, and 420.
Description: Creation of apparel
product line or collection from concept to consumer. Application
of principles of apparel design from artistic rendering, technical
sketches, pattern design, pattern grading, marker making, and
construction of several apparel garments from the line or collection.
CSR 480: Financial Counseling and Planning Internship
Prerequisite: CSR
342
Description: Supervised internship
in the financial services industry. The
experience will enable students to develop their professional
interest and skills.
CSR 481: Ethics and Compliance in Financial Counseling
and Planning
Prerequisite: CSR
342, CSR 386, and CSR 486. Senior
standing or consent of instructor.
Description: Examination of the ethical
and compliance issues in the basic areas of investments, risk
management, taxation, retirement and estate planning.
CSR 484: Consumer Investment and Savings Decisions
Prerequisite: ECON
210, 251, or equivalent; CSR 342. Senior

Description: A survey of consumer
investment alternatives, with emphasis on financial assets.
CSR 485: Case Studies in Financial Planning
Prerequisite or co-requisite: AGEC 425, 456;
CSR 386, 486; and MGMT 445.
Description: Financial planning principles
and practice. Course utilizes
a case study approach toward financial planning for upper-
and middle-income households. Business calculator required.
CSR 486: Retirement Planning and Employee Benefits
Prerequisite: CSR
342, seniors only.
Description: Analysis of employee
benefit plans, retirement needs analysis, and types of retirement
plans including employer sponsored plans and participant directed
plans.
CSR 490: Honors Independent Study
Prerequisite: Second
semester junior standing or higher. Open
only to student in Consumer Sciences and Retailing. Authorized
equivalent courses or consent of instructor may be used in
satisfying course pre- and co-requisites.
Description: Independent study
