Community Variations in Child Care for Working Poor Families: Contributions to Child Development and Parental Employment Opportunities

This is a three year field-initiated project funded by the Child Care Bureau of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in 2001. The research employed an integrated design, using existing data gathered by the state of Indiana , interviews, survey questionnaires, and direct observations to describe and compare the “childcare landscapes” in four diverse Indiana counties. The study, now complete, provides comprehensive data on the child care experiences and outcomes of more than 300 low income working families in Indiana. The results give a detailed picture of the types and quality of child care used by these families. In addition, the associations between child care quality and child development and parent employment outcomes are analyzed.
