Service Learning

A well-rounded education incorporates learning inside and outside the classroom. Through service learning, students have a chance to apply what they are learning in class to real-world problems, all while providing a service to others.

Examples of Service Learning in CFS

  • With the future relocation of US 231 in West Lafayette, hospitality and tourism management students explored possible locations from social, environmental, and business perspectives.
  • Students traveled to El Salvador to volunteer with Ambassadors for Children over spring break.
  • Child development and family studies students regularly complete needs assessments and/or program evaluations for not-for-profit community programs or agencies.
  • Students taking the foods and nutrition communication class get hands-on experience teaching nutrition to actual audiences in the Lafayette community.
  • CFS education students team with Family Services of Lafayette to support the Families and Schools Together program by assisting with meals, child care, and family activities to promote family time.
  • Hospitality and tourism management students applied what they learned in the classroom about business feasibility studies to a real-life situation when they helped the Museum at Prophetstown evaluate ways the museum could better deliver on its educational mission to the community.
