About Joyce Beery Miles
Joyce B. Miles is president of her own consulting and training company, Joyce B. Miles & Associates, A Leadership Development Group. She has been a leader promoting systemic change in the educational arena to prepare students for the 21st century workplace. She has presented nationally to more than 5,000 participants and has co-authored a careers textbook for use in secondary family and consumer sciences classes.
Joyce received her bachelor's degree from Purdue University and her master's degree in vocational education from Florida State University (FSU). She worked for the Duval County Public Schools in Jacksonville, Florida, for more than 31 years. Joyce served as the family and consumer sciences supervisor where she provided assistance and training to more than 100 family and consumer sciences teachers. She retired from Duval County in 1997.
She has received numerous awards for her leadership as well as public service. In 1993, she received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the College of Consumer and Family Sciences at Purdue University. In June 1999, she received the Outstanding Public Service Award from Duval County Cooperative Extension. In June of 2005, she received the prestigious Leader Award from the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS). She has been active in community study groups and many non-profit boards.
She currently serves on the AAFCS Accreditation Council and the Development Committee and co-chairs the Centennial Fundraising Campaign. She was a key contributor on the Woman and Philanthropy Task Force, sponsored by the Florida State University Foundation in 2005 to actively promote philanthropy at FSU. She was a member of the FSU Connect National Campaign Committee and served on the Human Sciences Alumni Association Development Committee. She currently serves as a trustee for the FSU Foundation and is a member of the Steering Committee for the Women of Purdue. She and her husband, Bob, are members of Purdue University's President's Council Advisory Board as well as the Center for Families Advisory Council.
Joyce is married to Bob Miles, a Purdue engineering graduate. In preparation for the AAFCS Centennial in 2008-09, Joyce completed extensive research on Ellen Swallow Richards, the founder of home economics. She produced a DVD, The Life and Legacy of Ellen Swallow Richards, maintains a blog as Ellen's persona, and currently travels the country with her one-woman stage portrayal of Ellen, In Her Own Words.
