The History of Home Economics and Ellen Swallow Richards Presented by Joyce Beery Miles
CFS alumna, Joyce Beery Miles, BS ’65, has been researching the history of home economics in anticipation of the 100th anniversary of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. The information here and on the pages linked below was written and compiled by her.
Several years ago as a longtime member of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS), I made a major commitment to portray Ellen Swallow Richards, the founder of home economics. My idea was to produce a portrayal that would enhance the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the American Home Economics Association (AHEA)/AAFCS. At the time, there was no preconceived notion about what this commitment might entail, but it seemed doable. What wasn’t anticipated, though, was the profound effect this journey would have on my personal and professional life. It’s now five years later, and the stories are still unfolding. Dean Dennis Savaiano of the College of Consumer and Family Sciences has graciously consented to allow me this platform within the CFS Web site to share my journey with the college’s students, alumni, and friends in an effort to bring 100 years of precious history to light for the AAFCS Centennial Celebration in 2008–09.
If you are a current student, you will be amazed at our 100 years of history. If you are an alumnus, you will be reminded of earlier times on campus when you first heard this history — and even more proud today that you are a part of this national history. If you are a friend of the college, you will be astounded at the rich, scientific history of the home economics/consumer and family science profession as well as the impact our professional graduates have on the quality of life for individuals, families, and communities. The words of former CFS Dean Don Felker were never more true than they are today.
“Strong healthy families are crucial to our nation’s health and strength. No culture has been able to provide anything better than the family for producing strong individuals for the journey of life. For this reason alone, we must assure their continuing, positive presence.”
