The following is required in order to receive credit for the internship experience:

1) The student must register for HTM 302 (Hospitality and Tourism Industry Internship) the first week of the semester after the internship is completed.

2) The internship must be paid and the student must have proof of hours worked.

3) The student must be rotated through three functional areas.

4) The student must work a minimum of 400 hours for a summer or semester internship.

5) The student must attend the final group session.

The student may receive one credit for 400 hours or two credits for a semester internship in which the student worked 800 hours. HTM 302 is repeatable up to a total of four credit hours. The grade is pass or no pass.

PROCEDURES FOR STUDENTS

  • The student must attend an Internship Orientation Session prior to the internship. A session will be held the second or third week of each semester. During the session, information on all forms and materials will be distributed and discussed. (Additional forms, applications, and materials may be picked up in the HTM Career Center in Stone B-22.)
  • The student and his/her supervisor must complete the application form. Included with the application are the HTM Internship Participation Guidelines. These guidelines should be given to the company representative. It is the student's responsibility to see that the completed application is given to the Career Center coordinator in the HTM Career Center (Stone B-22) by the deadline date. This form may also be faxed.
  • During the internship, the student will be required to complete two progress reports and fax/mail them to the HTM Career Center by the specified due date. The company will be completing two evaluations of the student during the internship.
  • Toward the end of the internship, a company representative must complete the second (final) evaluation of the student. This can be one that the company routinely uses or one provided by the HTM department. It is the student's responsibility to make sure the company evaluation is completed and sent to the HTM Career Center .
  • During the first week of the semester immediately following the internship experience, the student should check with the Career Center coordinator in Stone B-22 to submit his/her final report, turn in proof of hours worked (paycheck stubs showing hours), register for the HTM 302 credit, and receive details of the group session which is mandatory. A completed application form, all written assignments, proof of paid hours worked, and group discussion attendance must have been completed to earn the HTM 302 credit.
  • Students are encouraged to contact the HTM Career Center coordinator or the internship faculty advisor to discuss any problems encountered during the internship. (Do this as early as possible)

COMPANY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Complete their part of the application form.
  • Place the student under the supervision of a training director, personnel director, internship coordinator, or other appropriate person so the student's progress can be monitored.
  • Whenever possible and applicable, allow the student to attend departmental meetings and training sessions.
  • Complete student progress report midway through the internship and at the end using Purdue University's HTM department evaluation form or the company's own form.
