Course Description
The concepts of management of people for effective operations in foodservice, lodging, and tourism involving supervisory development and communications; the pretesting, training, and evaluating of employees; and the development of attitudes and morale of people working together.
Pre-requisite
Hospitality and Tourism Management majors only and (First semester sophomore standing or higher).
Course Objectives
- Understand the role that Human Resources plays in the context of a hospitality business.
- Learn trends that matter to the Human Resources function.
- Understand the laws that come into play when securing, developing, or releasing personnel.
- Analyze the motivating potential of various hospitality jobs.
- Determine how firms recruit human resources.
- Differentiate between personnel selection techniques.
- Appreciate the fact that training is not a cost but an investment for viable hospitality businesses.
- Understand performance management strategies.
- Examine the importance of employee development programs.
- Explore the nature of high turnover rates in hospitality businesses and formulate ways to reduce it.
- Learn various employee incentive programs.
- Learn various employee benefit programs.
- Understand the role of collective bargaining and how to successfully cope with union leadership.
- Explore the challenges facing those firms with a global reach.
- Define a high performance organization.
- Analyze Human Resources case studies and judge how they would have handled the situation.
