Course Description
This is an introduction to tourism management using a system approach that integrates a variety of hospitality and travel organizations and businesses. It focuses on the understanding of tourism from the perspectives of travelers and destinations, while identifying tourism's economic, socio-cultural, and environmental impacts on communities.
Pre-requisite
Hospitality and Tourism Management majors only.
Course Objectives
- Understand what constitutes the tourism system.
- Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of tourism supply including the five-component destination mix.
- Use examples to illustrate three types of tourism impacts.
- Explain effects of demographic, cultural, and time factors on tourism demand.
- Demonstrate an understanding of what motivates people to travel.
- Describe what affects people’s travel behaviors, including information search and destination choice.
- Display an adequate knowledge of the characteristics of major tourist segments.
- Become familiar with basics of destination management, including tourism planning.
