Tourism Executive Speaks to HTM Research Class
Jim Epperson, executive director of the Harrison County Convention and Visitors Bureau, was a guest speaker at a research seminar hosted by Purdue Tourism & Hospitality Research Center (PTHRC). The topic of his speech was "Tourism Research in Action: Harrison County Destination Branding Process." More than 30 HTM graduate students and faculty attended the seminar, including students in HTM 501 (Hospitality and Tourism Research Methods). Mr. Epperson made a lively presentation on the strategic thinking that underlies many research projects that his bureau has sponsored. He demonstrated how the findings of the image study conducted by PTHRC are used in the process of branding his communities as a travel destination, and emphasized the importance of research and community involvement for successful destination marketing. Students, particularly those who participated in the image study, had a much deeper appreciation for the hands-on research opportunity made available to them as part of their educational experience in the HTM department.
