APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Students should send the following information to:

• Statement of purpose. A statement of purpose is regarded as a very important part of the application. Applicants are advised to carefully describe the reasons for seeking to study at the graduate level and to describe desired areas of program emphasis. This statement is of great assistance to the Graduate Admissions Committee. It is also helpful in arranging faculty support and appropriate coursework immediately upon entrance to the program.
• Two original, official copies of all college transcripts in English from all institutions of higher learning (and in the original language if other than English).
• Official GRE (Graduate Record Examination) or GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) report of scores taken within the last 5 years. Applicants may submit results from either the GRE or GMAT, but most students use the GRE. The Purdue University code number is 1631. The department code is 1RZ-NJ-46 (for GMAT).
• Three letters of recommendation using the Purdue recommendation form
• A current resume
• In addition, international students are required to submit TOEFL scores.International degree-seeking applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for Purdue University Graduate School admission. The Graduate School accepts all valid TOEFL scores, including those earned through the paper-based test, computer-based test, and (beginning September 24, 2005) Internet-based test. The minimum paper-based test score required for admission is 550. The Graduate School's minimum computer-based test score required for admission is 213. The minimum Internet-based test scores required for admission are the following: Writing 18, Speaking 18, Listening 14, Reading 19, Total 77. Note that in addition to required minimum scores for writing, speaking, listening, and reading, the Graduate School also requires a minimum overall score that is higher than the minimums for the four area tests combined. Applicants must meet or exceed each of the five scores (listed above) for admission to the Graduate School. Purdue University's code for the TOEFL application is 1631. Purdue University Calumet's code for the TOEFL application is 1638.

Students should hear regarding their possible acceptance into the HTM graduate programs within one month of the deadline dates for the application materials to be sent to the department.

ADMISSION STANDARDS

Successful applicants generally have the following minimum standards for admission to graduate programs:

• Baccalaureate degree (or four-year program equivalent) from an accredited college or university for entry into the MS program, and a master's degree from an accredited college or university for entry into the PhD program.
• Equivalent of a GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Combined verbal and quantitative score of 1000 or higher on GRE (Graduate Record Examination) or a 550 score on the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test).

In addition, students are competitively evaluated for acceptance based on their complete application materials. Criteria will include previous academic performance, a well written statement of purpose, previous work/professional experiences, quality of the letters of recommendation, and GRE/GMAT scores, as well as the ability to integrate the student's proposed research area with the HTM faculty research areas.

PREREQUISITE COMPETENCIES

Each applicant's transcript will be evaluated individually with regard to competencies. All graduate students are recommended to have completed coursework in the areas listed below, although it is recognized that individual plans of study developed in conjunction with a student's research interests may not require all areas listed below. If a student does not have adequate background for their area of study, they may be asked to take a prerequisite course(s).

INFORMATION FOR MS APPLICANTS

Transfer Credits

A maximum of 6 credit hours of completed graduate work may be transferred from another university and applied to a master's degree program. Such an allowance is at the discretion of the Graduate Admissions Committee and confirmed by the student's graduate committee.

Undergraduate Excess Credit

Credits earned in dual-level courses prior to completing an undergraduate degree may be included in a graduate plan of study at the discretion of the graduate committee, if appropriate grades were achieved and if the courses were certified in excess of baccalaureate degree requirements.

For people choosing an academic or a research-based career, the choice of a doctoral program is a very individualized decision. The program you choose should clearly prepare you for the type of institution, agency, or corporation you desire as a future employee.

At Purdue University's Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management, the goal is to prepare scholars who will be employed by world recognized research universities, policy-level government agencies worldwide, and internationally active corporations. Scholars are assisted in developing skills and perspectives which will assist them in meeting the highest standards for university tenure/promotion or agency/corporate promotion. The program recognizes the full range of skills needed for significant contribution in the complex fields of hospitality and tourism management.

SECURITY OF INFORMATION

The security of personal information is important to the University. Once admitted, a student has the right to request the University assign a randomized number for all student records. This will reduce the risk of U.S. Social Security numbers or international student numbers being used improperly by unauthorized persons.
