BIOGRAPHY
Sheryl F. Kline joined the faculty at Purdue in 2002 where she has developed a strong record of research in the area of hotel operation and management. Her research is influenced by 14 years of industry experience including management positions with several major hotel and casino hotel companies. She was a tenured full professor in the School of Hospitality Management at Widener University and came to Purdue University to pursue a more scholarly research agenda. Her major research focus is on hotel operations with a particular interest in training and organizational issues. Recently, her research interest has included the impact of technology on lodging management and crisis management.
Among her publications, she has authored or co-authored 20 refereed journal articles, two textbooks, one book, and eight book chapters. She also has presented at more than 30 national and international conferences. Her articles have received two Emerald Management Review citations for excellence and a conference paper won a “highly commended” award. Her most recent textbook, Hotel Front Office Simulation, is used in over 50 colleges and universities.
As director of the Center for the Study of Lodging Operations at Purdue, she has created a valuable information resource for the hotel industry and a focal point for lodging research within the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management. The center provides services and studies for Indiana-based hotel companies and performs high quality research for national and international associations and sponsors. Through her contacts, she has created research partnerships that provide graduate students with access to proprietary data and opportunities to do research with major hotel companies.
A committed teacher, Dr. Kline strives for teaching excellence and continually develops and refines her courses. Her expertise in teaching was evident early in her career at Widener University where she was promoted to full professor based on her teaching excellence. She also has received two international teaching awards for “Best Practices in Lodging Education” and the 2005 Bruce Lazarus teaching award. At Purdue, Dr. Kline teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses. She is also an extremely active graduate committee advisor and has served on over 30 masters and doctoral level committees since joining the faculty at Purdue.
Sheryl Kline has provided leadership on major academic and industry boards including the American Hotel and Lodging Association and the International Council of Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education. Currently, she is serving on a special faculty task force of the Professional Convention Managers Association. She is also the co-founder and co-chair of the International Hospitality and Tourism Virtual Conference (IHTVC).
She holds a doctorate in psychological studies in education from Temple University. Her dissertation focused on team productivity with applications in organizational development and training. Her master of science degree in hotel administration is from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and her bachelor’s degree is in economics and English from Rutgers University.
