CSR 268 Introduction to Family Business

This course is intended to introduce and illustrate some of the typical problems that come up in family businesses, such as nepotism, compensation differential between family and non-family employees, choosing successors, planning for transfer of the business from one family member to another, bringing family problems into the business, etc.

It includes various ways of governing the family business (e.g. Family Council, Board of Directors, etc.) and various plans which can be developed (Company, Succession, Family, Individual).

Case studies are included to illustrate how these issues play themselves out in the business and family environment. Citations for some of these cases can be found in the Resources section of this website.

After focusing on the problems, the course addresses solutions that companies and consultants recommend to avoid problems and help keep working with the ones you love as a positive experience.
